Featuring Liz -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Liz of Teeny Tiny Quilts is our featured quilter today!  I hope you enjoy getting to know Liz a bit more --

1. When did you begin quilting?
I learned to quilt in October 2006, when I took a beginner class at my local quilt shop.  I did a bit of sewing and enjoyed it, but 2007 was taken over by my pregnancy and the arrival of newborn twins, so not much time and energy for sewing.  I started back up and really got hooked in late 2008/early 2009. It's been non-stop since then.

2. Why do you quilt?
I quilt because it is something that I do just for me. I'm a stay-at-home mom, so much of my time is dictated by the needs of my young children (as so many of you know!).  Quilting is just for me.  Sure, I love to do it because I love being able to give handmade gifts to friends and family, and I love to play with and be inspired by fabric. But I love that the process is all mine.
3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
My most recent "tip," as much for myself as for others, is to be more of a stickler for trimming and squaring blocks. I used to not bother, not spend the time doing it. And figured I could just make it all work when it came together. And it did.... sometimes.  But sometimes it made for uneven, bumpy tops that got really distorted during the quilting process (especially straight-line quilting).  I've noticed a huge difference in ease of quilting and flatness of the top now that I've started taking off that 1/8" or whatever it takes to make all of the blocks straight and the same size.

4. What was your inspiration for your QF quilt?
My quilt-festival quilt was for a very close friend and her new baby. I asked her what colors she wanted, and she told me purple and green.  My initial attempt at a different pattern with some different fabrics was an absolute disaster. Seams didn't match up, colors were off, pattern was ugly. It was, however, an eye-opener for me. I realized I tend to prefer quilts with more solid colors, white in particular, to give them a little negative space and breathing room.  I scrapped the first round and started over, and am thrilled that I did.
5. Do you sew other things?
So far, I have not ventured much past quilts. But I have my first Oliver + S patterns on my desk and the kids have picked out fabric for pajamas. I'm ready for a new challenge! In between quilt projects, of course.

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I know I'm not the only one, but I always wish there was more time for sewing! As it is, I have to squeeze it into the few hours when my kids are sleeping (and I'm not!).  But it's a nice problem to have, the desire to make more things than I really have time to do. At least I'm not forcing myself to do something that's uninteresting to me!  I've also been "losing" some of my quilting time with a renewed commitment to exercise, and will be running my first 5K in March. Hope my legs hold out!
Other than that, you can also find me blogging about life, and parenting, and my kids at Goddess in Progress.

Amy here again - Liz thank you so much for sharing with us!  I love your quilts, and your photography - can't wait to see what's up next for you!

For a New Big Sister!

One of Ella's teachers is expecting a new baby boy, and has a 2 year old little girl at home.  When I learned this I started thinking about what I could do/make for the new babe!  Unfortunately, I've had zero time for extra quilt projects, so I put it on the back burner in my mind.

Then I received this amazing cut of fleece from Valori Wells, it is so soft and snuggly!  In the end, we decided to make a special blanket for the big sister, from Ella, who is our big sister.

Quick instructions:  Square up your fleece, buy satin binding, pin in place as you go, and stitch!  A walking foot probably would help with the creeping nature of the satin, but it's a sweet little fast blanket.

Ella was able to give the blanket to the soon-to-be big sister, at school (apparently she came for the art lesson) and it was a well received gift!  I'm praying that her baby makes an entrance soon!

Blessings ~

Andrea Baker Designs - Giveaway!

It's Wednesday, and time to introduce another great etsy shopAndrea Baker is sharing her talent and story with us today!  Enjoy --

Hi everyone. My name is Andrea Baker and I live in Columbus, Ohio with my wonderful husband and 2 beautiful children and loving dog and 3 moody cats.

I was inspired by the talents and teachings of my mother. As a child I remember my momma working at a wedding boutique in Toledo, Ohio. Specifically, I recall watching her sew the beautifully soft fabrics and create wonderfully fabulous dresses.
I love to create classy, functional and affordable handmade items with service that is unmatched. Sparked by the desire for a new handbag that nobody else had, I went to work on creating my very own design. I have received so many compliments on my unique creation that all signs pointed to opening shop of my own.

The creative focus of my business is on making quality handbags, tote bags, business card cozies, checkbook cozies and a variety of unique handmade accessories and items for the home. I specialize in custom orders; I work very closely with my customers. From customer description, to inception of a pattern, to quality assurance and customer satisfaction of fabric choices, my service is above and beyond traditional.

I truly enjoy taking my creativity and crafting it into something that can be held. Creating gives me a way to make something that can be held and potentially passed down from generation to generation. Crafting for me is also a great way to unwind and relax. My work is unique because each piece is something that I've envisioned and therefore has a bit of me and my very own touch in it.

To Win the nifty Business Card Cozy pictured above:

Springy Table Runner

Hi there!  I had a fun and productive weekend, and the best part is - there's no school today!  Friday was the end of the quarter, so the lovely teachers have a day to work without students.

I finished piecing a quilt, and prepped the backing, made from this beautiful collection - Botany by Lauren and Jessi Jung, I believe it will be out in March.  The colors are fresh and scream spring!  Before I finished my quilt top, I had already planned a quick table runner for my living room!

Honestly, I think I spent about an hour total on this piece.  I even stitched the binding on the machine - not as hard as everyone makes it out to be!  The only thing I would do different next time is cut the binding smaller - I was working with jelly roll strips.

Hopefully my table will stay clear so I can admire it all the time!  I hope you had a good weekend!

I need to go wade through all the giveaway comments and announce them - cross your fingers :)

Snow Fun!

It has been snowing a lot this week, and the wet heavy kind.  Usually we get the powder fine snow that is easy to shovel, but hard to build a snowman with! With 6 inches in the driveway I headed out with the girls after lunch, while Owen napped, to get the shoveling out of the way.  I probably ought to have returned indoors right away, but I decided to help build a sledding ramp with the girls!

Ella built her snowman, while I built the sled hill with Emmalie and Sophia.

Aren't they cute!?

The girls gravitate to the piles of shoveled snow, to go down on with the sleds - which is fine and lots of fun, until it ends up where it has been nicely shoveled from.  I don't care too much if it's just our space, but more often than not it's a neighbors property and I end up shoveling in again!  Don't want to upset the neighbors :)

Five minutes after I came in, there was a pounding on the door - Sophia can't open it with her mittens on!  "Ella wants to show you something!"
"What?"
"Just come see!"

She's sitting on top of her snowman!

Love these girls!

Now I'm off to sew and bake cookies before Owen wakes up!  Then I might have to take him out to try the sled hill out - he LOVES sledding :)  Hopefully it lasts the rest of winter!

Featuring Zonnah -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Zonnah has participated in both of the Quilt Festivals!  I asked Zonnah to answer a few questions for us - so we can get to know her better, and see a few more of her beautiful quilts!

 Images are courtesy of Zonnah
1. When did you begin quilting?
I started in January 2009.
2. Why do you quilt?

Stress relief, I have a toddler :P
3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

Well, it is not a technical tip just some advice, always try to push yourself into trying and learning new things you won't regret it.
4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

The backing fabric.  (Check the link above, to see a picture of the fabric)
5. Do you sew other things?

Yes. I have sewn clothes, curtains, a tent for my sons bed, toys, seat cushions, and several other things :)
6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?

I love to create because I can control it, when so much in life is uncontrollable. Also, I joined a virtual quilting bee called Snip.Sew.Send.  I love it because I can try new things without the pressure of having to make a whole quilt. Oh and a month after I started quilting, I joined up with the Dear Jane quilt along. I call it my crazy quilt because I am crazy for doing it.

Thank you so much for sharing of yourself Zonnah!  Be sure to check out Zonnah's blog for more of her beautiful quilts.

Super Full Week!

Hi there!  It has been one of those weeks, where everything happens - all at once!!  I've had scheduled posts, filling in the gaps for my busyness, which is great since I have no sewing that I can share with you :(

Tuesday I had lunch with Natalia and Amy, (I met Amy last year).  Amy came up from Salt Lake, where she's visiting her mom, with her kiddos and we all congregated at my house.  Soup for the ladies, Mac&Cheese for the kids - we had such a blast, talking, talking, talking for 3 hours, while the kids played!   If you have a chance to meet up with a blog friend ever - I highly encourage it!  It's nerve-wracking at first, but the jitters pass as soon as you start chatting :)

With my book my initial plan was to quilt all my projects myself - thankfully Natalia saw the trouble I was getting myself into before I did, and I've been taking them to her (my deadline is getting really close!).  It was hard at first to relinquish that control, but after getting my first two quilts back this week I am SO happy to have her quilt them!  Amazing quilting and she's fast!!  She's quilting them faster than I can crank out the tops :)

Today it's snowing like mad, and I've switched vehicles with Joe again, as he has further to drive in the fluffy white stuff.  I've already shoveled once, and the truck just slid down the driveway a little - ack!!  Guess I need to get out there again!  Of course I'd rather stay in and get more sewing done :)

I have no pictures today a snowy scene out my window from my computer.  Hopefully the plow comes by again soon!

Blessings ~
Amy

PS - there's a book giveaway and fabric giveaway going on!  And tomorrow I will have the first Featured Blogger from the Quilt Festival!  Stay tuned :)

PPS - I've nominated for an award by multiple bloggers!  Thank you!!  But I don't think I will have a chance to play along :(  You guys are the best!

Rosebud Quilter - Giveaway!

Want to win some fabric!?  Five readers have a chance to win Hope Valley Charm Packs from my friend Michelle, at Rosebud Quilting!

I asked Michelle to share a little about herself and her shop --

Hello, I'm Michelle, from Rosebud Quilting.  You can find me on my blog Rosebud Quilting, where I blog mostly about quilting and fabric, but I also enjoy knitting, gardening, rubber stamping, and of course photography.  I have a long arm quilting business {Gammill statler stitcher}, that at present I have just been working with local clients.  I branched out into the on-line fabric selling about August of 2009 and I have a shop on Etsy.  I carry a great selection of Kaffe Fassett prints and shot cottons, along with Phillip Jacobs, Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, Denyse Schmidt and later this month expecting Joel Dewberry's newest line.  I hope to keep expanding my selection.   I sell by the yard, half yard and fat quarter.  I also carry jelly rolls, charm packs and am in the process of making up quilt kits.  I use the Accuquilt for precision cutting with numerous dye templates (Dresden plate, drunkard's path, diamond, heart, basket, 2 1/2 inch strips, 5" squares, 3" squares, half-square triangles, 1" squares).   I love fabric and quilting and am enjoying meeting all the great new friends on-line, an added bonus that I had no idea how wonderful it would be.  I keep learning and getting inspired by all wonderful people who blog.  Looking forward to a great 2010 year.

Keeping the Feast

I'm excited to be reviewing another book for TLC Book ToursKeeping the Feast: One Couple's Story of Love, Food, and Healing in Italy, by Paula Butturini, is an incredible journey, that I loved reading!

From TLC Book Tours --

Keeping the Feast is a story of love, trauma, and the personal and marital healing that can come from a beautiful place and its simple traditions. It’s a memoir about what happens when tragedy and its psychological aftershocks strike a previously happy marriage and a couple must stubbornly fight to find its bearings. Most significantly, it is a book about the power of one of the most fundamental rituals – the daily sharing of food around a family table. Food — the growing, shopping, preparing, cooking, eating, talking, sharing and memory of it — becomes the symbol of a family’s innate desire to survive, to accept and even celebrate what falls its way.

Paula's memoir recounts the highest highs and the deepest lows in such a way that is meaningful and encouraging.  She takes you back to the table of her childhood, time and again, and describes the foods eaten in such a way that you can almost taste it.  Many, if not most, of us have encountered devastating, life altering circumstances in our lives, which makes this book relate-able, even if we've never traveled to Rome, or don't eat Italian food.

Paula opens up the world of depression as her husband, John, struggles to remain afloat for years, and her own emotions as she is angered by the way life has turned out for them.  Daily she and John would share three meals together, no matter the circumstances before or after the meals. Paula describes mealtime as her anchor for each day, she would plan no more than for the three meals each day, and getting through each of the meals was a milestone.  Beautifully simple, delicious food to nourish them - body and soul.

I know from my own trials, that it is the little things that matter the most.  The little (big) hugs, excited giggles, good food, and friends to smile and laugh with, morning light through the window, and the gentle whisper of the wind.  Looking at all that is right, and focusing there.

I highly recommend this book, and Lisa at TLC has kindly offered a copy for one of you!  Just leave a comment to be entered in the drawing.  (I'm not ready to part with my copy yet.)  I hope I've told you enough about it to whet your appetite, but not too much that you are no longer interested  - it is so well organized and thought out, it reads easily despite the heavy nature of the content.

Hope for Haiti

This week I'm pretty sure we all have been shocked and affected by the devastation in Haiti.  My friend from college wrote a great post that sums up a lot of my feelings - I highly encourage you to read Jaimie's post

Over on twitter I've seen a couple posts about crafthope and their response -

Craft Hope for Haiti Shop Spreading seeds of hope one stitch at a time

If you are able to contribute in any way, big or small, it is all part of the larger goal, bringing hope to Haiti.

Making the Most of my Space

So I've been thinking about my post for today, what should it be (insert - blank stare) and I remember the ebook - of course!  Inspired post!  One aspect of the post inspiration was finding balance, but I'm all out of balance right now - thankfully I DO sew at the kitchen table, that way I'm still in the middle of the family activities.

I want to share with you my studio, or lack thereof, and how I make it work for me.  Finding space is a constant struggle, I often purge stuff to make the bit of space I have work for me.  Someday I will be spoiled with a studio space of my own (I pray!) and then I will jump for joy - but right now, this is what I've got!

I've changed where I keep things a bit from when I last posted about my "studio" but the main principles are the same.  We added this dresser to the kitchen for more much needed storage  - I claimed two drawers for fabric as I loaded in baking sheets and miscellaneous utensils.  The ipod dock is the newest sewing accessory that Joe surprised me with recently!  It is a great little unit, with big sound :)

My ironing board hangs out over here when not in use.  I typically save up my ironing for one session, and try not to walk away - I hate to think of the kids pulling it over on themselves!  It goes up and down 2-3 times daily :)  And the iron is on top of the same shelf, wrapped up nice so there are no cords tempting little hands.

I've also added this printer cart that was sitting unused in another part of our home.  You can see my machine sits on the bottom shelf, my box of notions and fabric on the second, and a pile of quilt backs and bindings on the top with a couple of yet to be started quilts on the right.  My sewing machine also comes up and down a couple of times each day, I do my best to not have my machine or fabric on the table while the kids are eating.  We are not past spills, not in the least!

Part of the ease in it all is having my power cord plugged in, but out of reach when not in use.  Here it is with my aprons and pizza thingy.

I use the kitchen cart/island for cutting and organizing all the bits.  My cutting mat fits on top perfectly and I can walk all the way around it if I'm trimming blocks.  Or I can wheel it into the living room if I want to try to watch tv while working on top!

Finally, my bookcase, well in part!  I have books stashed everywhere :)  This one houses folders that I need regularly, sketch books, my rulers slide in on top of the books or stand, and my cutting mat goes behind it, when put away - not often lately.

This "studio" is less than ideal, but works for me!  Everything has a place of it's own when it needs to be stashed, but when I have 10 minutes or more, I can easily get to what I need and continue working on my project.  All the while keeping track of what the kids are up too!  Any suggestions you can think of?  I would love to know what you would do in my space.

I'm impressed with how many of you have voted!  I have not purchased any fabric myself, and I can't believe I didn't make that an option - that's what I get for blogging after 10pm.  Today is the last day and then I will post the results :)

Thanks for reading!

Priddy Creations - Giveaway!!

ETA - The winner is Linda T with no blog - I've emailed you Linda!!

I have a treat for you today!  A beautiful camera strap has been offered by my friend Amy, of Priddy Creations for one of you!

I asked Amy to share a little about the how and why she creates --
After my second daughter was born, I decided to stay at home with my girls. I have always been a career driven person and knew that I wouldn't be happy not having something to do. While my family is important, I am a person that needs a creative outlet. So I started scrapbooking and beading. That eventually ended up leading to selling on eBay. I switched gears a few years ago and traded in my beads for fabric and the rest is history!
As for why I love to create....well, that is easy! There is nothing more satisfying than seeing an idea or thought come to fruition. Especially when giving it as a gift or when purchased from a customer. The facial expressions when they open it or the lovely emails gushing over it....That is the reason I keep doing it.
I think that SO many of us can relate to this!  I love to watch my kids snuggle up with their quilts, in fact Owen doesn't sleep without his!  That can be a mixed blessing :)

I love the camera strap that Amy has offered up!  Now that we have a second small camera, I need to think about making the dslr strap a little cuter, and more comfortable - I use it nearly everyday!

Here's your chance to win one --

Fast Finish - Yay!

Even though I don't really need another bag (according to my family!) I did need a finish!  A little something that could be completed and shared here, and be a low key item just for me.  I've had this bag cut out for quite a while and so last night, was the night!  I had pieced a couple backs earlier in the day, but set aside my current piecing project, to finish something!

This is an unlined tote bag intended to carry quilt projects in progress and the like! (In fact, I put two quilt tops/backs in to take the picture!) Having joined the local quilt guild (it's fun!) one of the first things I noticed was that lots of ladies have large totes for toting projects for show & tell - here's mine!  I made it with two 1/2 yards of home deco fabric, one for the bag and one for the handles.  I have a 1 yard cut waiting for a similar bag, but I may use dowels for handles.

What have you been up to!?  I've not been to my reader in over a month!  I just have to prioritize my life a little extra right now - not enough hours in the day!  But, really, I do want to know what you all have been up to :)

I'm still looking for more nominations - talk your blog buddy into nominating you!

Blessings,
Amy

Quilt Inspirations

I just picked Emmalie up from Kindergarten, and this weekend has been so crazy full and busy there's been no time to plan or schedule posts. BUT Em came home with this --

Meet the Masters is at it again!  This month all the students have or will study Piet Mondrian and his modern art.  I see a quilt in this, do you?

Fabric Eye Candy

I got a little Hope Valley - I love the color range and the little prints!

Some of the teeny prints are hard to get a feel for online - they are great!

And all of the fabric is soft, and has a good weight to it.

Love the colors!  (I think I already said that)

This is what I'm working on at the moment.  I really should have been done yesterday, but I was painting. . . it's Breath of Avignon due out next month. :)

Check my sponsors out for your own assortment of Hope Valley!
I added a poll to my sidebar - How much fabric have you bought this year? It's just for fun, and anonymous, go cast a vote!

Have a great weekend~

My Birthday Girl

Thank you for the birthday wishes for Emmalie!  She had a great day being the center of attention and extra treats too :)  I'm behind (again) (as usual) in responding to comments, but I'm so glad that you are excited about quilters from the Quilt Festival being featured regularly!  I'm looking forward to it!  I'm thinking our first installment will start within a couple of weeks.

Back to Emmalie -

She was blessed with new clothes.

A huge box of crayons - every Kindergartners dream!

And quite a few Littlest Pet Shop figures, including this plush one.  (We now have 3 girls collecting the little creatures!)

She requested the butterfly cake again, with everything going on in our home I asked her to pick two colors, knowing that I didn't have a lot of time to decorate it!  (Go take a look at last year's cake.

She got them all on the first go!  She is a blessed little girl with all the love and presents she received today.  Joe and I are blessed by her sweet and gentle spirit.  We love you Emmalie!

Here's the rest of what I've been up to - painting the living room!  My Christmas present from Joe was the paint, and his ability, for the living room.  He's been working non-stop, so I thought it might take months to actually happen.  Much to my surprise, he showed up Tuesday afternoon early, and suggested that we begin painting!  I ran to Home Depot and Wal-Mart (BD shopping) and came back with all the necessities.   He got us started, but I spent most of Wednesday doing my best to paint two large walls.

We are covering the gold with a tealy blue called Jamaican Sea, and the ceiling is back to white.  It feels so fresh and bright - I'm loving it!!  Now what to do with those curtains. . . ???  I'll post more make-over pictures when my computer isn't pushed up against the stairs!

Blessings~
