De-Stashing!

I know you all have told me it's okay to have a stash....I just don't have the space to store it! Someday when I have a studio - someday (sigh...) for now, I'm selling a bunch off.

ETA - Wow! Everything is gone - thank you all! My site will be down for a while today for some upgrades. I'll be back tomorrow with my new pattern and a winner or two!

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 5

Happy Monday! I have the blocks for our Simple Sampler - I hope that you are having fun, and maybe learning a bit too. I've been tempted a few times to sew up all the blocks, but I have really enjoyed doing two blocks a week with you guys, so I haven't!

If you are starting now, these will catch you up -

This week we have a 6-Grid Chain, these are great blocks to alternate in quilt tops, and a perfect addition to our sampler -

To make the Chain block you need:

6 - 2 1/2" squares from two fabrics

From your solid:

4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles

4 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles

Lay out your pieces in the block formation, we will work from the center out.

Pin and sew your center 4-patch

Match up your center seams, and complete the 4-patch.

Pin, sew and press your seams open.

From the sides add, the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles.

Pin, sew and press your seams open.

Next, add your 2 1/2" squares to both sides of the remaining 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles.

Pin, sew and press. Line things up again -

Match up your squares, pin, sew and press.

Almost done! Add the rectangles to the sides once again.

And the remaining squares to the rectangles.

Pin, sew and press.

Add the top and bottom to your block.

Pin, sew and press once more :)

Our second block is variation of a 4-patch, we are adding hourglass blocks to it.

Here's what you need:
2 - 6 1/2" squares in one fabric
1 - 7 1/2" squares in two different fabrics - these will be your hourglass blocks.

Take your 7 1/2" squares back to the cutting mat, and cut on the diagonal.

Then cut into quarter-triangles, I've found a second ruler, with the 45 degree angle to help mark the center, and keep things straight. Just move it away once, you are all lined up, and cut.

Repeat with your second 7 1/2" square.

**There is another way to make an hourglass block - we will get to that method later...

Layout your pieces, as you would like to sew it.

Lay the quarter triangles over one another.

Pin, and sew from the center, out. We will be trimming the outside of the block later, so having the center match up is more important. Press your seams open.

Now turn the triangle units over on one another, match center seams, pin and sew. Press open again.

We trim the hourglass blocks down to 6 1/2" to match the squares that we cut earlier.

With your ruler lined up on the 45 line, also mark the center of the hourglass at 3 1/4". Trim two sides, then turn your block line it up again, and trim the other two sides.

All trimmed up and ready to finish the block!

Join the left and the right. Pin, sew and press.

And join both halves together.

Here's all my blocks! Three more weeks of blocks, then we get to add sashing - it's coming together!

Featuring Nicoletta -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Hi Friends! I'm feeling rather accomplished - I spent yesterday basting and quilting my quilt! Of course, it was between errands and meals, and afternoon pool time. The how question (How do you do it all!?) comes up now and then in the comments - I stay up late, and get up early! I've never been one to need 8-9 hours of sleep, 6-7 is good, 5 if I'm in a pinch :) Anyway, let me get a binding on it, wash it, and finish up the pattern and I'll show it to you next week! Do you have a favorite size quilt to make? I put a poll up, to gauge your quilt commitment level - let me know!

Our featured quilter today is Nichi (Nicoletta) she's from Italy and I love her use of color. I hope you enjoy getting to know Nichi better and seeing her quilts -

1. When did you begin quilting?

I took my first quilting class in 2003 (after some years in collecting books and magazines) and I fell in love with it immediately…I was ready to fall in love!

2. Why do you quilt?

I have always love colors above all and quilting gives me the possibility to play with better as every other kind of crafting. I like all the quilting techniques, traditional, appliqué and improvisational that I feel as the new way of expression but that, as the modern art, can't set aside from the perfect knowledge of the basic rules and the tradition.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

My favourite quilting tip is to use all the fabric I choose for a project to finish that project ( for the border or the binding or the backing) so as to have the least scraps possible.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

The inspiration for my Festival quilts came from the red fabrics in my stash …I would find a way to use them all together and the big hexagon pattern seemed perfect.

5. Do you sew other things?

I love the quilts, I have quilts on my bed and on my sofa and I like to stay under them… so I like to make quilts!

Challenge Week

Hi there! I took a day off, just didn't have anything worth saying! :) Thanks so much for all your great ideas for naming my quilt. I think I have an idea decided on, but want to give it a few more days to make sure there's not a genius idea still out there :)

I really enjoyed being challenged a couple weeks ago, and have decided to issue you a challenge! Once a month, we will have a Challenge Week. You decide on one thing, one thing, you want to challenge yourself with for the week, tell me about it in the comments, and one week later I'll have a linky so we can check out each other's projects! I might have to work out a prize too - give you a little more incentive to get you motivated.

Next Tuesday, July 20th will be the beginning. Then on the 27th we will share our projects!

I really want to emphasize the one thing aspect - so often I get (and I know I'm not alone) overwhelmed with how many things I need to do and don't start ANY, so this will be a jumpstart! Cut out a quilt, piece a top, or finally finish that binding, whatever you have on your list that you just can't seem to get started, or finished as it may be!

I know that when I did a survey a while back lots of you expressed needing help getting motivated to finish things, and last week when I asked how many projects you have in the works, many of you were a bit shocked to have actually counted them. So hopefully this is just what you need!

Sewing with Linen & a New Quilt Top

Hi! I'm excited to share a new quilt top with you. I sewed blocks into the wee hours of the weekend, and yesterday started sewing the top up with my morning coffee. I really wanted to see this quilt top come together!

Sewing with linen....it's kinda squirrelly and needs lots of pins. As the weave is larger than the cottons we typically use, it has a tendency to not hold it's shape.

I carefully pressed and blocked each piece as I added it to the block, to keep things as square as possible. This quilt top is not perfect, cutting was a challenge as well since it was 60" wide and my longest ruler is 24". But the fluidity that it adds, and the heft are really nice. It is slightly heavier than my quilting cottons - but I like it a lot!

I know that there are a few linens being marketed to quilters, but I've not had a chance to work with these yet. I'd love to, and compare - eventually :) I love how the colors pop in these pictures!

My quilt measures 60x72 inches and I have a pattern in the works! I need a little help naming this quilt...how about, if I pick the name that you suggest, you win a copy of the pattern when it's ready!?

Here's my kiddos- they were enjoying an evening swim, their cool down after dinner :) They keep me on my toes!

My crazy monsters! Love them :)

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 4

Hi Friends! I hope you had a great weekend - I was a working double duty all weekend with Joe backpacking up in the Unitah's. We had some special fun, a little bit of drama, and I stayed up late sewing too! I have blocks sewn up, and a few rows pinned for a top, hopefully I can show it to you tomorrow.

For now I have this weeks Sampler Blocks!

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 3

Originally I had planned to put all the HST blocks at the end and work up to them...but then I decided we should slowly work through them, so I have one more for you this week. I hope you aren't cringing - they really do get easier with practice, and that's just what we are doing! Perfection is good and all, but don't forget to enjoy the process, and learn as you go. And remember - I have been sewing for 20+ years, I've had a bit of practice with straight seams and working with my machine daily the last (almost) 2 years, it all makes a difference. Please don't get frustrated, or down on yourself.

Our first block this week is a traditional favorite - Log Cabin. You can make these so many different ways, I have one side in white and the other scrappy - feel free to play with color placement!

Here's what you need:
From your solid - cut 2 - 2" strips and cross cut into:
1 - 2 x 11"
1 - 2 x 9 1/2"
1 - 2 x 8"
1 - 2 x 6 1/2"
1 - 2 x 5"
1 - 2 x 3 1/2"
From a variety of prints -
1 - 3 1/2" square - fun opportunity to fussy cut a favorite part of your fabric
1 - 2 x 5" and 1 - 2 x 6 1/2"
1 - 2 x 8" and 1 - 2 x 9 1/2"
1 - 2 x 11" and 1 - 2 x 12 1/2"

For this block we work from the center out, one piece at at time, lay out your pieces like I did, and prepare to sew and press, and sew and press!

Lay the 3 1/2" length of white over your center square, pin and sew.

Press your seam open, and working counter clockwise continue around the center block, adding the 5" length next. Pin and sew.

How's yours looking? Now we start adding prints, still working counter clockwise, lay the 5" print length over. Pin and sew. Are you thinking I'm super anal? always pinning..? I find that if I don't pin, the fabrics have give and will shift under the needle without my knowing. When adding these strips, I pin to keep the seam below in place, and two ends, just so that they match up nicely. When we get to the longer strips I add another to keep things in line.

Continuing on, add the 6 1/2" print length.

Back to the white strips, add the 6 1/2" length. Pin, sew and press open.

Still in counter clockwise fashion, add the 8" length.

Now add the print 8" length. Pin, sew and press open.

Now the white, 9 1/2" length.

The final white length is 11". Pin, sew and press open.

Next add the print 11" length.

Add your final print length, at 12 1/2", to finish the block!

I've told you how much I like starch, but I don't think I told you that when I've finished a block I like to set it with a little starch. When complete, AND ONLY THEN, (you don't want to shrink things before you finish) spray a bit on your seam allowances on the back to set. And carefully press. The seams lay nice and flat and I don't have to worry about things getting wonky as I wait to quilt. Not necessary - but something I find helpful :)

Our second block for this week is a mosaic block, my software named it Mosaic, No.5...so uninspired! Let me know if you have a good name for it - I think a quilt full of these would be really fun.

Here's what you need:
From your solid - 8 - 4" squares.
From one print - 2 - 4" squares.
From a second print - 6 - 4 " squares.
If you aren't using a solid, look to the contrast of your fabrics - the difference of light and dark in your fabrics.

On the wrong side of your white or light, mark the diagonal. If you are having trouble, consider also drawing 1/4" away from your center diagonal, for a sewing line.

Pin a white square to each of your printed squares.

I thought I would share where I start things, and how I use my hands to guide the pieces. These things take time to find what works best for you. Having a friend/mom over your shoulder as you learn, reminding you of where your hands are is handy, even if trying in the moment :)

I like to start with my needle down with these blocks so that I can get it as close to the needle as possible before stepping on the gas.

I hold my thread tight, and gently hold the square firmly in the direction you want it to go.

I keep my hand in front of the needle, guiding the square.

And when I reach the other tip, use my finger tips to steady the square as it moves past the needle. Usually I use my other hand on the right side as well, to keep it straight. And I go SLOW when sewing these HST's always.

After sewing your seams on both sides, set with the iron, and cut on the diagonal.

Press your seams open. And trim to 3 1/2", using the diagonal as your guide.

Here's the little pile of scraps, after the fact -

Now we can lay out our block and sew the rows together! Actually there's a lot of options for sewing these together - I have a couple more in the weeks to come - it's fun to play with the triangles and see patterns form.

Lay your blocks over, carefully match the diagonals, pin and sew.

Press your seams open, and lay out the block again to finish sewing the rows together.

Carefully match seams up again and pin - notice that I flipped my top two rows over so that I have a running start to the bundle of seams. It sews easier and things line up better (in my experience).

Sew and press seams open. Lay things out again.

Match seams up, starting in the center, and working out, pinning carefully, the first row to the second, and the third to the fourth.

Sew and press seams open. Then repeat the last step to complete the block!

I really love the effect of this one! What do you think?

Featuring Wendy -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Hi there! Today our featured quilter is Wendy of Ivory Spring - I hope you enjoy getting to know Wendy a bit more --

1. When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting in October 2005 with no prior sewing experience orwhatsoever. My quilting mentor and friend Barbara had been talking tome about giving quilting a try. Right about that time, my husband hada new nephew - so, that was just the reason I needed to start my firstquilt.

2. Why do you quilt?

I have always been fascinated by quilts, but never did venture intothe world of quilting because I didn't know how to sew. I loveBaltimore quilts, and want to actually reproduce one some day. I quiltbecause I want to share in the experience of quilters in the past thathad produced the many treasured quilts.

3. What is your favorite quiltingtip?

Do not be intimidated by the difficulty level of a quilt pattern -if you like it, jump right into it. You will learn a lot in theprocess and build your confidence level. And the sense ofgratification is enormous when the project is completed. For my firstquilt, I chose a pieced and applique pattern. It was not exactly easy,but I felt really good after I complete the project.

4. What was your inspiration foryour Quilt Festival quilt?

I was inspired by my love of spring, and the fabrics I was givenwith which to work. Tulips were the perfect subject for spring! Iwanted it to be a sweet quilt - so, adding the ribbon bows made thevase of tulips look like they are meant to be gifted to someone to maketheir day special.

5. Do you sew other things?

Yes, I dabble in heirloom sewing for my 17 month old daughter. Ilove to do hand smocking, and thus does a bit of heirloom garmentconstruction.

6. Anything else you would like usto knowabout you?

I am originally from Southeast Asia. I came to the States when Iwas 19 to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. I ended up with twodegrees in Chemical Engineering. I worked for 7 years in a researchwind tunnel at the University of Arkansas. I am now a work-at-homequilt designer and mom and wife. My work has been featured in TheQuilter, Quilter's World, UK's Popular Patchwork, Quiltmaker,Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Quilting & Embroidery, Bernina's Throughthe Needle, and Creative Machine Embroidery. I am very excited aboutmy upcoming features in Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting and EasyQuilts! My passion is free-motion quilting on my home machine. Wholecloth is the keyword to melt my heart!

Another Project

Yes, I'm cutting into some more fabric! I use to be a one project at a time sorta girl, but that's so not true anymore :) In fact I might cut another quilt while I'm at it - I love being able to piece and press in an assembly line!

Crossweaves + Natural Linen

These are the colors I'm planning to use from the stack - I love the brights!

I originally purchased my FQ stack from Fat Quarter Shop, but they aren't carrying the Cross Weave collection right now - I added the dark brown yardage from Pink Chalk Fabrics. And the linen I had on hand!

How many projects do you currently have in progress?

Dresden Plates Update!

Just popping in to show you where I've gone with the Dresden Plates! They are laid on top of one another so far - I'm hand stitching them in place, it's just like stitching a binding in place.

I hope you don't get tired of seeing this project...I'm really happy to be making it for my DQS partner :)

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 3

Hi there! We had a nice relaxed day yesterday to celebrate the 4th, and were up too late after watching the fireworks, but fun was had by all, and that's all that really matters!

So now it's time to make our blocks for week three :) You have squares down now - right? This week I have two new techniques for you, basics that will become second nature, with practice. Ready?

Our first block is called Two by Three and with it we will use strip piecing.

Here's what you need:

From two fabrics cut a strip 2 1/2" x 18 1/2"

From two more fabrics cut a strip 2 1/2" x 23 1/2"

Mine are paired light and dark fabrics, or more saturated fabrics.

Four strips total:

Now we are going to sew the strips together, pair up the same size strips and sew along one long edge.

Carefully press your seams open, now we need to crosscut segments for our block. Trim one end, when cutting segments, I always use the seam as a guide instead of the top or bottom of the unit, then my units are always square.

Turn to cut 5 - 4 1/2" units, from the longer set and 4 - 4 1/2" units from the shorter set.

If when lining up your ruler with your seam, the edge isn't straight, move the ruler over a bit so that it the 4 1/2" line is met, then cut, turn your square and clean up the other side.

Usually it's a tiny bit that you are trimming, but will make a difference in how things sew together...easy peasy!

Now we are ready to sew the block, lay out your pieces, as shown.

First sew the rows together -

Press and add another square to finish the row -

Press, then sew the rows together -

Starting at the top - pin and sew, then press seams open again.

Then pin and sew the bottom row to the block.

Press and your block is complete!

Strip piecing saves time and helps your piecing to be more accurate, when you trim carefully, I know that you will use this technique more and more as you quilt!

Block two is a Snowball Variation, and with it we will have a introduction to half square triangles (HST's).

Here's what you need:
From your print - 4 - 4 1/2" squares, and 2 - 5" squares
From your solid - 1 - 4 1/2" square, and 2 - 5" squares

We have the square part of the block, but we need to make our triangle pieces, just a little magic...

On the wrong side of your solid 5" squares, mark the diagonal. Careful not to pull your fabric as you mark.

Any marking tool will work, but this what I recently upgraded to...I was in a pinch and my LQS just had these for marking -

Now add your print, right sides together.

Add a few pins to keep things in place - the diagonal is call the bias, which has a lot of stretch. If you are tugging and pulling too much things will start getting wobbly.

At the sewing machine, sew 1/4" away from the line you drew.

Turn the squares around and sew on the other side of the drawn line.

Here's mine post sewing -

Now back to the cutting mat to cut along the drawn line, using your ruler.

Are you with me?
You will have 4 total units.

Now press your seams open, carefully, remember the bias...

Now it's time to trim things up again, remember the rest of your squares were 4 1/2", so we want these to be the same. Use the 45 degree line on your ruler, to line up your seam.

Notice the ruler is lined up to 4 1/2", or slightly over, trim then turn and trim the opposite in the same manner.

Often you will find instructions for sewing HST's with a smaller measurement, and they won't require trimming...I prefer to cut things a tad bit bigger and trim to the size required. I find that I have less frustration this way.

Trim all four so that your HST's look like this -

Now we are ready to sew our block! Layout your pieces like so-

And sew the rows together. I've learned when working with HST's that it is easier to sew from the side that doesn't have the diagonal seam, toward that does have a diagonal seam - when possible. Does that make sense? If I start, where there's already a diagonal seam allowance it's harder to get the machine going - so I work up to it. This means I turn things around a bit, but don't have to pick stitches out.

Left to right sew the rows together, pressings seams open.

Pin carefully, the bias is not yet fully encased and will still have the desire to get wonky on you. Just take your time :)

Now sew the rows, from the top down. In this instance you will have to start with the diagonal seam, make sure you hold your threads tightly as you begin, and maybe use them to pull your block along the first couple of stitches.

Press seams open and add the last row.

Hello Everyone, my name is Jackie and I am so glad to meetyou!

1. When did you begin quilting?

Technically, I first started quilting in my 6th grade HomeEconomics class when I made a patchwork pillow. I actually still haveit too!! But I am not going to tell you how many years ago that was.So, I guess I became serious about quilting about 17 years ago. That isthe short answer. There is a much longer one, but I won't bore you.

2.Why do you quilt?

That is an easy one, because I absolutely love it. Ilove every aspect from picking fabrics, to designing, piecing,quilting, binding, all of it. It is also a big stress reliever for metoo. Whenever I just need to "get away" this is my favorite outlet.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

My favorite quilting tip is to never stop learning. Try new techniqueseven if you think it may be too difficult. I take classes whenever Ican. Sometimes it may be just a quilt that I have wanted to do for along time and I already know the technique. But all teachers teachdifferently and offer up their own tips. I think this is one of thebest things that you can walk away with, just one new thing you didn'tknow before.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

My inspiration for QuiltFestival was my favorite quilt that I made in 2009. It is a paperpieced pattern, which I love to do and it a special gift for mymother's birthday later this year. The fabric colors were inspired bymy Mom's favorite candy Chocolate Raspberry Truffles. That is what Idecided to name the quilt.

5. Do you sew other things?

On occasion, Isew totes/bags. I also make pillowcases for charity. And of course, Iquilt my customers quilts on my long arm.

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?

Because quilting is such a passion of mine, I turned it into abusiness in 2000 and it is called Canton Village Quilt Works. I havebeen a Professional Long Arm quilter since then and own a GammillStatler Stitcher. The majority of my customers are local, but I havequite a few that mail to me from all over the country. One of mydreams, since I began quilting, was to open a quilt shop someday. Well,timing has never been right and with the internet really taking off, ithas enabled me to recently open my own online quilt shop!! Couch Pillows - a la Amy

Amy Butler that is! I have had scraps from my roman shade project waiting for pillows, just no pillow forms. So I waited. The kids and I ran an errand for Joe first thing this morning and when finished went to Wal-mart since we were already out - I don't go often.

I found 2 nice 18" pillow form on sale - and snatched them up! After finally getting home, and convincing the boy to at least rest in his bed... I took an hour to whip these up.

Nothing fancy, but functional and cute! They have an envelope back so I can wash as needed too.

What have you been up to today?

Can we say leftovers for dinner?

Dresden Plates

I really thought I needed to get a few more things done today, before sewing up these plates....but the piles were calling to me. I'll get to the other stuff here in a few minutes :)

I LOVE them, but I can't decide which center plate to use. I have time though, I next need to figure out what my background will be, and if I want to piece it.

Starting

I have a to do list, including a throw quilt, twin quilt and doll quilt...the trouble seems to be starting! (I have all the fabric, I've been focused on the quilt-along so far) So today I'm going to start on the doll quilt :) I had been thinking new york beauties, but I'm chickening out - I'm going to make some dresden plated with these Happy fabrics!

Keep me accountable - okay!? I need to share some progress here really soon, so I can work on the rest of the list.

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 2

Happy Monday! I'm all set and ready to share the next two blocks, are you ready!? Just in case you are starting now, these will catch you up -

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 1

Also, if you have one block smaller than the other, most likely your seam allowance is a teeny bit big. If you were making the same block for an entire quilt it wouldn't matter too much, you could just trim them all to the same size. With this sampler, you could trim all to the same size when you find your smallest block after sewing them all. Or, if you would like to have more accurate seams check out my tutorial - Sewing Accurate 1/4" Seams.

Here's our first block for this week: Plus

Here's what you need:

From one fabric cut

1 - 4 1/2" x 12 1/2" rectangle and 2 - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares

From a second fabric cut

4 - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" squares

If you need help with cutting go back and look at the first set of instructions, or ask in the comments.

Then layout as shown here:

We are going to work on the sides first. Lay the top squares down over the center squares.

Pin and sew your pieces together.

Press your seams open, and set it back down with the other pieces.

Lay your bottom pieces onto the center.

Pin and sew together. Then press.

Almost there! Pin and sew one side to the center. Since there aren't any seam to match up begin pinning at either edge and work your way in.

When I'm sewing a piece that has seams in it to one that doesn't, I like to keep the seams up so that I can keep track of them and make sure that they are flat going under the needle.

Now repeat with the other side to finish the block!

Not too bad - right? Next up is the Double Four Patch:

It's a mixture of the two blocks that we made last week.

Here's what you need:
From one fabric -
2 - 6 1/2" squares and 4 - 3 1/2" squares
From a second fabric -
4 - 3 1/2" squares
Lay them out to make sure you have it in the right spots.

Starting with the smaller pieces, lay them over each other as shown, and pin.

Sew them together and press seams open.

Lay one pair over the other, match seams, pin and sew.

I've made lots of silly mistakes by sewing my pieces together differently than I had intended, which is why I always lay them out in between each step :)

Lay one of the four patches over the 6 1/2" square.

Pin and sew them together.

Press your seams open.

Lay one half over the other. Pin and sew.

Check and press seams open, one last time.

1. When did you begin quilting?
I began quilting in 2002 after sewing pretty much my whole life.

2. Why do you quilt?
Because I can’t stop! Seriously, the colors and the graphic design are such a wonderful creative outlet. It is so satisfying to create something from your own mind with your own hands. And better yet if that something keeps you warm, warms the heart of a friend or the décor of your home.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

I’m not very good at free motion quilting, so when I want to quilt a curvy motif on a quilt, I draw it on freezer paper, iron it to the quilt top and quilt around the freezer paper.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

When I was designing “A New View” there were several ideas going around in my head. I was interested in making an asymmetrical quilt and in the graphic possibilities of very simple blocks. I was fascinated with windows in buildings around town and I wanted to make a scrap quilt that was not multicolored. These ideas all merged together to become “A New View”.

5. Do you sew other things?
I do sew other things. These days my non-quilt projects are most likely to be home dec projects such as roman shades, curtains or pillow covers. I used to make a lot of clothes and have made quite a few Halloween costumes!

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I am so inspired by all the amazing (mostly) women I see on the Internet finding time to fit creativity into their busy lives.

The Finer Things

A couple months back, I decided to try some new thread and the recommended needles. I had been having trouble with tension in my machine and the obvious lint build up was part of the problem. I spent a little bit more than I usually do, but I believe the payoff is huge! My machine has been happier!

And so, here are a few of the finer things I have enjoyed using while sewing lately :)

So Fine Thread &Topstitching Needles by Superior Threads -- The needles seem to stay sharp longer than other brands.
Famore Scissors - the tip is tiny, helps to get threads from the tiniest spaces.
Patchwork Pins - so tiny and fine, no visible holes left in the fabric after pinning.
Selvage Pin Cushion - it stays where I put it while pushing pins in as I sew.

The next thing I need to find is a cone holder/stand. I love the thread so much I went with a cone, and it's much to big for my machine - so far I've just set it on the table, and let it feed up, but I don't think that will last too long.

Simple Sampler Quilt Along -- Week 1

Hi there! We are home now and inflicted with the usual bug bites and camping exhaustion :) I went to bed at 10 last night, which I rarely do, but really needed some solid sleep. This week I'm starting with 2 basic blocks to get us started, and I'm going to share some of the most basic steps to encourage those of you without experience thus far.

To begin, have your iron & ironing board, starch if you like (I really, really like!) cutting board, ruler and cutting mat out and ready to use.

I like starch because it gives the fabric a crisp finish and helps with stubborn bolt creases.

Just be sure to treat all your fabric the same, if you starch some, starch all. It also tightens the grain, causing it to shrink just a tad.

After ironing out your fabric, you are ready to cut! Here's our first block:

A classic 4-patch. You can make this block in any size and it's still a 4-patch, a great addition to lots of quilts, and a great place to start!

Since we are using 1/2 yard cuts, I decided to take the selvage off and use one end, usually we use the width and cut strips, but I don't need a lot of these and want to conserve my fabric. Cut one strip 6 1/2", then square the end, and crosscut 2 - 6 1/2" squares.

Repeat with your alternate fabric, and lay out blocks as shown.

Pin the top two squares together, like so:

I find pinning at either edge, keeps the layers from stretching while I sew. And one in the middle to keep things lined up nice :)

I chain stitch as much as possible - it save thread and time.

Next iron your seams, first set the seam by pressing it just as you have sewn it.

Then open your seam, and carefully press open.

Flip it over and press from the right side as well, make sure you didn't get any extra creases in there.

Layout your pieces in the block formation

Match up your center seams, like so:

Usually I do this in my hands, without a camera....Open where your seams match up to verify that they are lining up as you wish.

Pin on either side of the seam, in the seam allowance.

Match the edges and pin in the center as well.

When sewing, wait until you have your needle in the seam allowance to remove your first pin, then slowly go over the seam and remove the second pin.

I always double check my seams before I iron, stitches are easier to remove when they have yet to be ironed. Learn from my experience! They matched so I ironed, if yours do not match as you would like, take out an inch on either side, and try again.

Second block, a simple mosaic, or 16 patch. More practice in basic skills :)

Press your fabric, fold with selvage edges together, and square your edge, notice that my ruler is lined up on the folded edge of fabric.

Cut one 3 1/2" strip.

Remove the selvage edge and crosscut 8 - 3 1/2" squares.

Repeat with alternate fabric.

Eight of each

Layout your squares in the block formation, and pin pairs together. I like to turn one over onto the other, then pin, so I don't mix things up.

Pin like so:

Ready to sew!

More chain stitching, saving thread and time.

Press your seams open as instructed earlier.

Forming rows, lay the left over the right and pin.

Sew and press seams, layout rows.

Turn one row down onto the next and match seams up.

Pin carefully.

Check points and press seams open.

Join the two halves together, pin carefully and sew.

All done!

There's lots of little steps in there, they go quick once you get into a rhythm. You can piece one block at a time or do all the cutting and pinning at once - do what makes you comfortable :) Do you have questions? I'll do my best to answer then in the comments. Challenge Quilt Complete

Hi friends :) I hope you had a great weekend! We spent ours in Dinosaur, camping with the kids. I'll have to tell you about it later this week. Right now I want to show you the mini quilt I made for a design challenge with the local guild.

I was given this page from a seed catalog, and given instruction to take inspiration for a quilt from it. I mentioned before that I really liked the picture on the left, with the shadows and variety of green...Here's the finished product ::

The most artsy quilt I've made to date! I first put in the lines, thinking about the vines, while not straight vines do offer structure and support. Then I added as much haphazard free motion quilting as I could in order to keep all my circles in place.

Some of the edges are bent over onto itself and others flap a tiny bit.

I hope you can see the texture in this one. I didn't wash it, but I did throw in the dryer with a bunch of wet clothes! I wanted it to fluff up without too much fraying :) What do you think? I had fun just being creative with it - I tend to over think stuff...

I'm curious to know how many of you have made it through all the links in the festival! I added a quick poll to the sidebar just to see :) Today's quilter is Thearica of Pigtales and Quilts - I hope you enjoy getting to know her better!

1. When did you begin quilting?
I made my first quilt blocks at the age of 8 under the guidance of my paternal grandmother. At the age of 19 she called me and asked me to come to her house because she had sashed those blocks together after so many years and that we were going to quilt the top. My sister rode along with me and she and I, along with grandmother, granddaddy, my aunt and uncle, we quilted the entire quilt that day. It isn't the prettiest quilt in the world but to me it is Priceless!

Shortly after that, I made my first quilt from scratch and put it into a consignment shop where it sold the following day. It was from the pattern, Little Farmer Boy. The customer ordered another quilt as well so I made that one as my 2nd quilt. My 3rd quilt was an appliqued Strawberry which was traded for a handmade wooden jelly cupboard. And the rest is history! I have no idea how many quilts I have made over the past 30 years! I do know that between my 2 grandchildren, they have 15 quilts. And that number does not even begin to cover the bottom of the bucket!

2. Why do you quilt?

I am happiest when I am quilting! It is also my sanctuary! Whenever I am feeling blue all I have do is go into the studio, turn on my classical music, turn on the machine and quilt and forget about my troubles!

I love creating art on fabric! I love every part of the quilting process but the greatest joy is turning the quilt to the back once I am finished with the quilting! I have always done this...I have no idea why...but there is nothing any sweeter than the satisfaction one feels, when they see the beauty that emerges!

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

If you cannot see it from a galloping horse, then noone is going to notice! (from a fellow longarmer)

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

My mother was my inspiration for the Quilt Festival. She was diagnosed with cancer in November 2007 and passed away on September 1, 2009. My friends from the HGTV Quilting and Needlework Forum all made heart blocks and sent them to a friend in Massachusetts. She enlisted the help of another friend there and they put the blocks together into a quilt. They shipped it to Texas, where another friend quilted it. She then mailed it to Virginia to another friend and she hand delivered it to me. Of course, I cried when it was presented to me! There is nothing like the love of friends when you go through a death. I use the quilt every evening when my husband and I lie on the couch watching television. It is like getting a huge group hug every single day!

5. Do you sew other things?

Over the past couple of years I have began to do a lot of Crazy Quilting. The largest project to date was a block that I made for my mother in law for her birthday in April. I had it framed and presented it to her a few days before her birthday. I couldn't wait to give it to her. She loved it! I also do a little bit of knitting, cross stitching (small projects), and make a few art and craft items.

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?

I love charity work and believe we all should use the talents that God has given us to help others. I head a yearly charitable event along with the help of the quilters from the HGTV Quilting and Needlework Forum. At the moment I am hosting our 7th annual raffle which will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This is our 3rd year to work for this wonderful organization! The RMH will be presented 100% of the funds from the raffle in September of this year. We have 36 quilts up for grabs in the raffle, all of which were made by the quilters of the HGTV forum. They also sent along 10.00 each for postage to get the quilts to the winners. Last year was our biggest year to date, raising a whopping 4,000.00!!! We would love to pass that amount this year and with everyone's help, we can do just that! We invite everyone to purchase tickets for the raffle and in turn help this great charitable organization! The Ronald McDonald House Charities help so many people each and every day! You can find the pertinent information on my blog.

I have been self employed for the past 23 years, running a custodial business for the first 18 years of that time period. I retired from that line of work in 2004 and now run a professional longarm business here in Henderson, NC. I am married to a wonderful man who is by trade a tobacco farmer. I have 2 wonderful daughters and a beautiful granddaughter and charming grandson. I am originally from Alabama and moved to NC in 2003. There are 650 miles that separate me from family but we go home every chance we get. Life is good!

Challenge Quilt

A couple of weeks ago I told you about my challenge quilt, and proceeded to leave you hanging...sorry about that! I learned that the deadline was pushed back a month and ceased production.

This previous post will explain it a bit more if you missed it :)

I randomly laid down the circles I cut out and pinned them down, just to keep them in place. Then spray basted and did a little quilting :) I'll have to finish things up and take another picture, SOON!

I'm so excited that some of you are wanting to quilt with me! If you are new to quilting, not sure where to start, or just love sharing in the experience - you are in the right spot! We will start with the most basic of blocks and proceed to a few more challenging, feel free to work at your own pace too - no pressure :)

My desire is to introduce all the basic, necessary skills for a quilter. As you see there are 16 blocks, each is 12" with the sashing (white space between blocks) the quilt finishes at 58 inches square.

I have the fabrics pictured in the quilt, 1/2 yard of 8 fabrics. More than enough :) if you are pulling scraps the largest square we cut will be 7 3/4", just find lots of scraps that work well together. 2 yards of white, or neutral of your choice. (I got my white - here!) Eventually when we make a back, you will need 4 yards, and 1/2 a yard for binding - I think mine will be scrappy with the extra bits.

8 - 1/2 yard cuts + 2 yards of white

Other needed items ::
Sewing machine :)
Iron
Rotary cutter & mat
Rectangular Ruler
Pins
Marking pen or pencil

Summer fun? you ask? During the Festival I had a sweet email from someone wanting to learn to quilt, from the very beginning, and asked if I might be willing to do a quilt-along. Little did she know, I had already been thinking about one, and her push was just what I needed!

And so, I present the Simple Sampler Quilt Along!

Last week I received EQ7 and I've had so much fun putting tons of ideas to my screen instead of my sketch pad. I went through the libraries and selected blocks perfect for introducing a new quilter to simple techniques that have big impact, and will allow you to piece your little heart out!

I'll share a few more details tomorrow, but I'm hoping to start next week. I will introduce 2 blocks each week for 8 weeks then we can finish them up together!

Tumbler Quilt Top

Hi there! You've probably noticed that I'm off my usual schedule this week :) The massive giveaway and end of the school year have changed things up for me - we have just been enjoying our days, and next week the new routine will be put into motion. Complete with chore chart - don't tell my kids yet!

Remember this stack of tumblers?

I sewed them up into this quilt top!

These are all Art Gallery fabrics, from three different lines I believe. Together a fun, scrappy quilt, that went together beautifully! No seam ripper required - that's my kind of sewing :)

I did pin all the junctions as usual, and used a consistent seam allowance - you do need to use the basics - but the perfectly cut pieces make for much easier sewing! It measures 44"x72" right now - I'm going to dig through my box and see if I have any good borders, but I may just leave it :)

AccuQuilt is offering a huge sale on their Go! Cutters, if you are ready to make a purchase (hint, hint!) there's no end date available, so hopefully it's still available after I announce the winner on Monday.

I've had a couple of questions about my bar for hanging quilts...Joe rigged it up for me a few months back. A couple of brackets from curtains, no longer being used in the living room, and electrical tubing cut down to 10 feet. The clips are from Ikea (different curtains) and I move the quilt around often so that I don't have too much stress on anyone point. I have been thinking about adding sleeves to future quilts.

I need to email a bunch of featured quilters and get those set up for the next month or so - it completely slipped my mind this week! Next week we will resume the regularly scheduled Friday posts.

Doll Quilt Swap 9 Inspiration!

I'm excited to be in the next round of Doll Quilt Swaps on Flickr! This is a great swap and so much fun to participate in. Last weekend I learned that I was included, and this next weekend we should be getting partner information. Let Summer Begin!

As of noon today my girls are officially done with Kindergarten (Emmalie) and 4th Grade (Ella)! I'm really excited to have them home for the summer :)

No rushing to get them out the door in the morning, and no need to constantly watch the clock for the pick up times. I plan to consolidate our errands into a once daily trip out, from the usual three - the school is not far, but loading and unloading kiddos is a CHORE no matter how you slice it!

The weather has finally been cooperating, and I'm thinking about putting my winter coats away for a few months. Afternoons in the back yard with the kiddie pool are here at last!

This all sounds good right? There's just a tiny bit of me that is sad. Both girls had GREAT teachers, they loved being in the classroom and soaking up all the wonderful information fed to them each day. Seriously, Emmalie and Ella were both a bit sad today, because they won't be seeing their teachers everyday. Emmalie asked if she could keep going, no break!

The other part that makes me sad is that they are growing up SO much, I just try not to get too far ahead of myself or I turn into a weepy mess. (Ask Joe on that one) I'm so blessed to be their mom, and so proud of them -- I just had to share here with you!

AccuQuilt - Go! Cutter Follow Up

Hi there!
Reading the comments from my review I decided that a follow up post was in order. Like some of you I've had a few skeptical thoughts about the Go! Cutter, and it's efficiency, and so I thought I would share a little more of what I've learned using it.

This is how it shipped to me, the blank grey foam. You can barely see it, but the 5" squares are not exactly straight with the edge of the green rectangle. I emailed my contact at AccuQuilt to ask why - they try to position the shapes at a slant, because they go through the roller easier. My initial thought was that I got a "off" die - I was ready to ship it right back! But they did it on purpose :) So then - what is the best way to use it?

I went searching youtube, for videos to educate myself. First, take a permanent marker to the edges. This simple step, makes lining up the fabrics easy! Then I get cuts with the grain too!

I lined all my shapes - in the review comments someone asked if I could change it for the desired shape. Nope! What you see is what you get!

Notice that the 2 1/2" strips die have no blade at the ends - continuous cuts!

Line up the fabrics with the drawn lines instead of the edge of the die for precise and speedy cuts.

You can see here better that the fabric is not square with the die.

Here is the other concern - waste. After running the above piece through the roller, this is the remaining scraps.

Not much really! And I'm ready for another pass -

With this smaller size die, having a little fabric overhang is not a problem.

I cut 5" charms and mini half square triangles until this was what was left of my fat quarter. Not much more than I typically have after squaring and re-squaring my fabric. I'm really loving having this around :)

I have pinned all my tumblers together, and I'm hoping to get to sew them today, but check back tomorrow for a chance to win your own Go! Cutter :) I'm excited!

Featuring Barb & Mary -- Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilters!

You read that right! Today I am featuring a pair of bloggers - Barb and Mary. They are the last of the fall Festival features, thanks so much to all of you that have nominated bloggers in the last week!

Mary--

1. When did you begin quilting?

I made my first quilt in 1978. It was a graduation gift for my collegeboyfriend, a huge brown puff quilt that was more like a lead blanketthan a quilt. I had stuffed each puff with heavy cotton batting. (Whoknew?) Luckily there are no pictures of this regrettable work. :)

2. Why do you quilt?
LikeBarb, I've always enjoyed all types of needlework, knitting, sewing,cross stitch, needlepoint, rug hooking - you name it I've done it. When I tried quilting it just stuck with me. I could be creative andmake something beautiful, and be practical and make something useful atthe same time. And, more importantly, quilting has brought me manygreat friendships through the years.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
I don't have a favorite tip but I like Barb's very much. I'm going to try that. (Read below!)

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?
Iwas one of the three friends in this group project. I remember beingcaptivated by the picture of the original quilt in Kaffe's book. Itwas neat to find out that my friends felt the same way so we decided itwould be a fun project

5. Do you sew other things?

I'ma big sewer - I mostly sew quilts but I also like to make jackets. Inaddition to the quilt blogs, I love reading the sewing blogs - thoseladies are making incredible garments. I've also made a fair number ofdrapes and curtains in my day.

6. Anything else you would like us to knowabout you?

Myfamily has recently relocated to the Midwest (Zionsville, IN) and it'smy quilting and knitting that are helping me feel connected in this newcommunity.

1. When did you begin quilting?
I started quilting when my son was born in 1989. My first quiltwas a pattern of sailboats for him. I made that quilt, and then I tooka class to learn how.

2. Why do you quilt?
Ihave always enjoyed needlework starting with embroidery and crossstitch. I was always drawn to quilts in Country Living Magazine in the1970s and 1980s. When I started a family, I finally felt I had thetime to pursue it.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
Maketime to do a little everyday. Even 15 minutes of quilting orappliqueing can make a difference in finishing a project. And neverleave home with a little project.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?
Thequilt in Kaffe Fassett's Museum Quilts from the Victoria and Albertmuseum. It was a group project with 3 of my quilt friends. We usedhis patterns and made many of our own. We modified it quite a bit fromKaffe's version, using the original as inspiration.

5. Do you sew other things?
I enjoy making purses, jackets and the occasional Halloween costume. I also like to do needle punch and red work.

6. Anything else you would like us to knowabout you?

Oneof the things I enjoy most about being a quilter is all the wonderfuland fun women I have met over the years. I have had the pleasure ofbeing in many guilds and sewing groups where I feel supported andencouraged and where we have fun!

I've felt a little absent this week...seems I have needed a little time off the computer. Big surprise there! I guess I feel a bit of a let down after the big push for the Festival - I'm glad every week isn't like that, but it is fun when it comes around :)

Still In Progress...

My Tuesday was like a full Monday! Celebrating Sophia's birthday made for a fun day thou :) All that to say, I didn't get to work on my design challenge quilt more, BUT I did take a couple more pictures for you!

We were given a page from a seed catalog, and told to select one picture to use as inspiration.

This is where my focus landed - peas! I love the picture on the left, all the shades of green in the shadows, and the shape. Nothing has to be literal, just our inspiration, so I cut a circle template!

Maybe now the photo from yesterday makes more sense? I'm planning to be back tomorrow with more :)

Our Birthday Girl! Sophia had a great day being the center of attention. We also went to the doctor for her and Owen, a little reactive airway trouble...I'm thankful that it's nothing worse, just a nasty cold that doesn't want to leave.

Spring Quilt Festival

Like most of you, I've spent a good amount of time thinking which quilt I wanted to post for the festival. There's a number I really wish I could share, but that will have to be at a later date :) In the end, I decided to post my Hunky Bars quilt, it is simple, yet beautiful and well loved in this house!

I had drawn a quick sketch of this quilt months prior to making it, and so when I was finally able to make it, just because, it was really refreshing to make. This was one of those quilts that just needed to be made, I have a few more like that, and a few bags too! I hope to get to more of them in the coming weeks.

For me, this quilt reinforces the thought that I've shared here before: "a quilt doesn't have to be complicated to be beautiful and well loved". I hope you agree :)

While making it I photographed the entire process so that I could make tutorials for here, lots of pictures later you can pretty much learn to quilt right here!

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2010

Welcome to the third Blogger's Quilt Festival! I'm so glad that you are here - and I hope that you plan to enter a quilt in the Festival! Everyone is welcome to participate, this is a relaxed festival with no judging, no gloves, and beverages are allowed, encouraged even! :)

AccuQuilt - Go! Cutter Review

I was recently contacted by the nice people at accuquilt. They wanted to see if I would like to use and review their Go! Cutter! My immediate response was YES! I've seen Jackie talk about her Studio Cutter the last year or so, and admired from afar, knowing that I would probably not be owning anything like it....Now I do! :)

I've never used anything like this, at first I was a bit incredulous. Really? That will cut my fabric? It's just gray foam...

I went through my scraps, and pulled a bunch to cut. (I only got sidetracked for 30 minutes - organizing!)

It's SUPER simple to use, the gray foam goes up, then your fabric on top.

The cutting mat goes on top, to sandwich everything together - then crank it through the roller.

On the other side you get your shapes -

These are half-square triangles with the dog ears cut off for you already.

and full width of fabric 2 1/2" strips - just like a Jelly Roll, and perfect for bindings!

After getting warmed up, I decided I wanted to really cut a quilt out! I've really like the look of tumbler quilts, but never wanted to take the time to cut all those shapes. With the go-cutter I can cut up to 6 layers of quilting fabrics - and they come out perfect, every time! I pressed and folded my fabric, added the mat and ta-da--

Less than a hour later a huge stack of tumblers, ready to go into a quilt top! Did you read that? Less than an hour!

Aren't they pretty!? I had so much fun, and I was cutting fabric! - no worrying about the ruler slipping, or where my kids are in relation to the rotary cutter.

Really good experience with accuquilt so far! I can't wait to add to my collection of dies :)

Finally an antique quilt I couldn't resist photographing -

You can enlarge the picture to read more, but it was made around 1875 - 135 years old!

I think it's pretty amazing to see some designs last the test of time. Makes you wonder about the quilts you are making today....hmmm. Always add a label!

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Are you ready!?

I'm getting closer :) I wanted to share a couple of thoughts before Friday gets here.

1. The quilt you choose to share, doesn't not have to be brand spanking new! Nor does it have to be perfect - there's no judging here.

2. Put aside all your negative self-talk and enter! Everyone is welcome, regardless how long you have been quilting or blogging. If you are new it's the perfect time to get to know a few friends! Just do it - don't be intimidated :)

3. A new post dated the week of the festival is required - schedule a post for the 21st or later but don't plan to post a link to an old one.

4. Get ready to spend the weekend online!

5. To enhance your "blogger" profile check out this post to make sure your email is attached to the blogger comments that you leave.

6. I know I've said it before, but did you put a button up!? The code is in my sidebar or on the BQF page.

7. I registered #bqf on twitter a couple weeks ago, if you plan to tweet about the event please use #bqf so everyone can find the tweets easily. I plan to share links to great entries :)

Basics Tutorial: Hand-stitching a Binding

After binding a dozen quilts in a month, I thought I would not want to bind quilts by hand anymore, but I LOVE it still! Here's how I get it done:

This is my collection of quality hand quilting threads, thimbles and a sharp needle. I have a warm and cool neutral, and the yellow I had purchased for actual hand-quilting, but it's come in handy a few times :) I've used less than high quality threads - don't waste your money - they tend to break and knot. And I never used a thimble, until I had a few holes in my finger from the back of the needle :( I've wanted to try the stick on type thimble but haven't had a chance yet.

I keep my supplies with scissors, and the binding clips all in an empty quart yogurt container. It has a lid, so I hopefully don't loose things.

After I iron my binding, away from the quilt top, I turn it under and clip from the front. The clips are not necessary, but if you have any trouble with your hands I highly recommend them. Less fatigue and aches with the binding clips. They help to train the fabric before you tack it down.

Pull out about 18" of thread, or the length you are comfortable with - if it's too long your arm will tire quickly. Knot off one end and find a spot to start! I like to start about 12" away from a corner, that way my homestretch doesn't include a corner. (my own little mind trick!)

Hide your knot in the raw edges, and pull your needle out just below the stitch line.

Now carefully put your needle in the fold, about 1/4" distance and bring it out again. Pull tight, and snug your binding down over the stitch line.

Put your needle in the backing fabric in the same manner, (backing fabric only) and pull tight again, and snug the binding down again.

Continue in the same manner, until you get to the corner.

At the corner, draw your needle up past the stitch line.

Then draw it up, again past the stitch line, in the binding fabric as shown. This secures the binding edge.

Fold the next edge over to form a miter. Slowly thread the needle between the two layers of binding fabric, usually up, down, up, to secure the miter.

Then push the needle back down, catching the backing fabric in the corner, and pull the thread tight.

Make a small stitch in the binding to secure, and continue around the quilt in the same manner.

Here you can "see" my stitches.

Your finished quilt!

I've gotten to the point where a 60" square quilt takes me about 2, maybe 3 hours depending on the interruptions, but my first few quilts took days! I hope that you enjoy snuggling with quilt while you finish your quilt - still one of my favorite parts of quilting.

This is how I've learned to bind and developed my methods as I went - I hope you share your tips in the comments if you've found something that works well for you!
