My Immediate Future --

Lots and lots of inches/feet/yards of bindings!  I like to roll my binding on a ruler like Natalia, and then I've learned I can wear it like a bracelet while attaching it to my quilt top.  This keeps it from getting twisted, or tangled.

Here's a tip for you --

I sew my strips together this way.  I've tried cutting them on the 45 degree angle, but usually mess it up!  So my easy solution is to sew, then clip away the seam allowance.  Most of the time I don't mark it, just eyeball it and move on to the next bit :)

I'm sure there's a few of you shaking your finger at me - I'm okay with that - this is what works for me.  :)
-----
In other news, my Emmalie is sick with pneumonia :(  She's had a couple of colds in the last month, and the coughs that accompany them, and developed that nasty infection deep in her lungs.  Sadly, she had it about three years ago too.  Most of my Wednesday was spent arranging doctors appointments, a quick trip to the hospital for a chest x-ray, and pharmacy for meds - all the while her main concern was that she not get a shot!      Poor thing.  I'm praying that we see her energy pick back up in the next 24 hours, and that the medication clears her up, so she can get back to school!  She hates to miss any school.  Though I'm pretty sure Kindergarten may be the culprit of the colds!

I hope you are having a good day - I'm probably on the couch with Em and a needle and thread, stitching a binding in place. OR trying to keep up with everyone's comments for the giveaway :)

  1. Oh Amy, I hope that she feels better soon! Such a tough thing for such a little person. But having mommy nearby sure does help. It will definitely give you time to get all your bindings complete.

  3. Brilliant idea for keeping binding tamed! I do the same thing with sewing/clipping/not measuring exactly. I think I saw it that way in a tutorial somewhere, so maybe there aren't too many head shaking. :)

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

  7. Awe kindergarten, the year of cootie catching. Saying a prayer that your little Emmalie will heal quickly.

I join my binding the same way and I never marked it. I may have to try winding up my binding like you so I can wear it while attaching. Thanks for the tip.

    Sew long,
    Melody

  8. I do my bindings exactly the same way. But I never tried wearing the roll as a bracelet - that's a great idea. Thanks.

Hope Emmalie is mending quickly. Quinn had it earlier this year and was much better 24 hours after starting meds.

  9. Hi Amy, so sorry Emmalie is so sick. Bless her little heart. Brings back memories of snuggling my little one through her hard times. They grow up so darned fast! Thanks for the binding tip. I will give it a try! I usually just roll it loosely and set it on my lap, then it ends up all over the place, tangled, awkward....Keep Emmmalie close! ~karen

  10. Love the pink polka dot binding.

On a side note, I hope your baby feels better. I see lots of doctor's office visits for us today. My son sounds like your daughter (same age too) I just hope it's not pneumonia for him.

  12. That's the way I do my binding too. Why not! My girls both had pneumonia a couple of times growing up, but as adults, nope. I guess maybe they grew out of it?? Good luck. She will always remember you sitting by her and sewing. Sweet moments.

  14. The "up" side of school is that the kids get exposed to lots of stuff so they get to build up their immunities; the "down" side is that they get exposed ... hope she feels better soon!

I do the criss-cross thing instead of cutting my binding ends too. I don't know how I managed to miss Natalia's tip about wrapping the binding around the ruler but I'll be adopting that tip right away! Thank you for passing it along!

  15. I hope Emmalie gets better quickly.

It looks to me as though someone has been delaying attaching binding to her quilts? I join my binding strips the same way as you, too.

I sew my binding just the same way, it works very well for me. Good idea to wear it like a bracelet when sewing, I will try this next time!

  17. Aw to Em...I've had that stuff a few times, once you get it you become more prone to it. I hope she's better soon, and you don't go crazy with her sick, lol or all those bindings.

  20. Thanks for the binding tips!

As for your sickie, I hope she gets well soon. I used to get severe bronchitis as a kid and it left me winded most of my middle years. The good news is that an adult, I am almost NEVER sick. I hope the same for Emmalie. I also wish her some good books to keep her from going out of her mind on the sickie sideline.

Hope she has a speedy recovery.

  29. Clever idea to roll the binding on a ruler and then slide onto your wrist. I've always got a tangled mess on the floor when I'm trying to sew the binding on my quilts. Thanks for the tip! Hope Emmalie is feeling better soon! Jenn

  33. I love your idea and I am going to do it that way from know on! Hope your little one is up and around soon, my daughter has asthma and we spent more time in bathroom, with steam then I can remember. I think I taught her to read in there! But it really helps.

  36. Poor little Em, hope she's feeling much better soon. Enjoy the snuggling Amy :)

I alway do my bindings that way too, I think the only thing the finger waggers would say is to pin and draw a line to sew on. But, hey why waste time, point and go! Great tip about the wrapping around a ruler, admittedly I roll it, gonna have to give it a try on the next batch :) Hugs

  42. Hope dear Emmalie starts feeling better soon...having her momma so close will help a lot! I have binding rolled up the same way, patiently waiting its turn:)

  43. I hope Emmalie feels better soon! I am not shaking my head at you. That is the way I learned though I ended up doing it another way that I learned from Eleanor Burns. I have tried wrapping my bindings around a ruler, though I never thought about the bracelet idea. I will have to try it, and what do you know I have a quilt waiting for binding.

  44. What pretty bindings! Binding is so fun because you know your quilt is nearly done. Hope your little one is well soon!

  46. I hope Em feels better soon, poor little love. I've been reading about quite a few folk and their kiddies getting pneumonia of late, both in the US and in Australia, and we're in different seasons too. Very strange, I didn't think pneumonia was that common.

I love your tip about putting the binding around a ruler and then on your arm as a bangle. I've certainly struggled with twisted binding in the past. I also join my binding as you do, it's so much easier to do it that way.

I read on Natalia's blog that she's been quilting all your quilts ready for your book - how exciting, I can't wait!!!! Will we be able to order the book from you directly? I hope we don't have to wait too much longer, not that I'm impatient or excited or anything, MUCH!!

    Hugs
    Kelly :-)
