Hi there! This week's featured blogger is Cheryl - she blogs at Cheryl Lynch Quilts. I hope you enjoy~
1. When did you begin quilting?
I started quilting in 1992. We had relocated to a new state for my
husband's job. It was a great opportunity to learn something new.
Being a scientist, I had always been fascinated by the geometry of
2. Why do you quilt?
After taking a few classes, I started designing my
own quilts.First I designed landscape quilts, then I focused on
primitive quilts and then art quilts. I quilt today as a means of
creative expression. I can't paint at all, but I use fabric as my
paint. It can be cut and manipulated into many shapes. The prints
provide texture and depth. The interaction of fabric colors also
presents a challenge.
3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
applique is one of my favorite techniques. I find that machine blanket
stitching around the shapes is very soothing and calming. To assemble
a multiple piece applique before attaching it to the fabric background,
use parchment paper. Assemble it on the parchment paper with a hot dry
iron. Let it cool and then peel it off, place on the fabric background
4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt? (See link for more details of this beautiful quilt!)
The inspiration for "Family Musings In Blue" was the love of my family. It includes a family tree, hearts and photos of my family. There is lots of beading and embellishing and hand embroidery. This type of hand work was also used to embellish "Willoway - A Folk Art Farm", which was featured in Fons & Porter's magazine. This farm represents a place where I would love to live.
5. Do you sew other things?
I don't do a lot of other sewing. I will make
curtains and drapes when necessary, but I even bring my pants to the
tailor to be shortened.
6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I lecture and teach workshops that focus on including images and words on quilts, embellishing and decorative edges.
Thanks so much Cheryl for sharing! Your quilts are works of art!
I hope you all have a great weekend - I will be playing with my new iphone :)
