Meet Vicki!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments on my blogging milestone! I'm not going to be able to respond to you each individually - but know that your comments mean so much to me - Thanks!

Vicki is a blogger friend I met a while back, and I wanted you all to get to know her too! I love her attention to detail in her projects and her love for her family. Enjoy ~

Hi! I'm Vicki and I blog at Sew Inspired. I grew up in Utah but in 2003 our family moved to the Kansas City suburbs. I have 3 kids ages 9, 5, and 1, and my husband and I have been married for 12 years.

I wanted to share a bit about my sewing history and show off one of my early quilts, too. My first sewing project was a little bear kit that my mom helped me make when I was 6. When I was 9 through 12 years old, I took 4-H sewing classes in the summers and made clothing for myself and my sisters, as well as lots of Barbie doll clothes (I got a Barbie clothes sewing pattern for Christmas when I was 10, I loved it!)

In high school I took two full years of sewing classes and really enjoyed it! I sewed some of my clothes and made things for others as well (one project that comes to mind is sewing bridesmaid dresses for my mom and my aunt for my uncle's wedding, when I was almost 17.) During my college years, sewing kind of took a back seat but I knew I would get back to it someday.

Soon after my husband and I were married in 1997, I went by myself to the quilt show at the Springville Museum of Art and I was just amazed, and in love, with quilting, and knew I needed to be a quilter. I had made a quilt with my grandma in 8th grade, and worked on a couple of other patchwork type projects as a teenager, but I hadn't ever finished a real quilt since junior high.

So I bought a rotary cutter and some purple and green fabric, and made my turtle quilt that I wrote about here. I also made a patchwork quilt with just simple squares for my oldest niece when she was born, and I think it's the only quilt of mine that I never took a picture of.

I made this log cabin quilt in 1999 and it was shown in the Springville Art Museum quilt show in 1999. I was quite ambitious and made the finished width of the strips 3/4". I remember choosing the fabric, planning out the quilting designs, and trying to figure out how to press the blocks and have them keep their square shape. I look at it now and it makes me realize I've learned a lot in the last 10 years--I wonder where my quilting will be in another 10 years?

I'd love it if you visit my blog to see some of my more recent work!

Amy again!

Vicki has been busy getting ready for Christmas with her family - she has some great gift and advent ideas. I hope you have a chance to poke around her spot today! I hope my quilting continues to progress over the next 10 years, where do you hope to be?

Blessings ~

Amy

  1. Wow...I am in AWE of her log cabin quilt. Just...wow.

In ten years...hmmm. It's so hard to say. My family has always teased me about flitting from one thing to another and not sticking with it. I can honestly say that sewing is going to still be in my life, and that I can only hope to be branching out and trying to design my own quilts.

What I would REALLY like to accomplish is working either independently or with my LQS to do quilting. I think it's an art form, and am constantly blown away by the talent I see in this online community.

  2. Ten years from now? wow, haven't given it a thought. I'm just picking this up after a 30 year old HS home ec class...

Just want to still enjoy it then as I do now.

    Thanks for sharing your friend.

  4. Great post, Vicki!! In 10 years, I hope to have used up quite a bit of my stash and quilted all those unfinished quilt tops and be buried in quilts.

  6. Hmmm, no idea where I'll be, sewing/quilting-wise in 10 years. Still sewing for my family... maybe planning a wedding dress for Sage? LOL!

Vicki, it was fun to read through your sewing/quilting history. I remember a lot of it. One thing I do remember during college was you taking a pattern drafting class. I was in awe of you!

  7. Amy-thanks so much for letting me share, and thanks to everyone for your kind comments. DL, that class in college did briefly cross my mind while I was writing this post--next year I hope to sew more clothing for myself and maybe use some of what I learned in that class.
