Inspiration: Solid Quilts

I think you all know that I love color, and solid fabrics can be so pretty all on their own!  Today I have a mosaic of inspiration for you:

1. city green, 2. Abstract squares, 3. Bar Code Quilt, 4. Habitat Quilt, 5. Solids quilt, 6. The Tempest
Created with fd's Flickr Toys

I have a quilt planned in solids (1 of 2 for the final book deadline) and I can't wait to get started!  These pictures make me even more excited.

Thanks so much to all of you that shared your favorite parts of quilting, I'm pretty hard pressed to pick favorites too but the moments I mentioned seem almost magical to me.  The quilt coming to life. . . I know it doesn't breath or anything, but you get me right!?  Anyway, thanks for reading and taking the time to comment - it means a lot to me.

Blessings :)

Question For Quilters

I've really enjoyed getting to know the featured quilters better, and so thought I thought I would ask each of you a quick question!

What is your favorite part of making a quilt?  And why, if you care to share.

For me, I love putting the rows together, and seeing my vision realized.  I also really love tacking down the last few feet of binding, and finally having a finished quilt!

What about you?  Is it the cutting? pressing? selecting fabrics? piecing?

Tell me!

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen that I've been working on a pattern the last few days.  Above is a peek of what I'm up too, you might notice that my seams are all pressed open - old habits die hard!  I'll share more after I have a few friends test the pattern.

Blessings~

Like New Ironing Board

I think it is better than new!  The fabric used on most ironing boards is so cheap - flimsy, rough, and blah.  I've had my current ironing board for about a year, and I was happy for the first week, then the first hole appeared in the side!  I put the recovering effort on the to do list, and there it sat, until now :)  My delay has been part, lack of fabric/time, part calculating a plan.

What do you think!?  I'm pleased as punch!

Anticipating questions, I took a few pictures.  My desire with this cover is to remove it and wash it as needed.  I like to use a lot of starch, and tend to overdo it, so the original cover is sticky and stained.  (You may have noticed it in this tutorial) So I decided to make it reversible.  I also wanted it to be cushy so that I can easily sink my seams into the board as I press, so I used two layers of warm and natural.  I have to say it's working great so far!

Here's what you need:
- Length of fabric - 6" longer than your ironing board
- 1 or 2 pieces of batting, also 6" longer than board
- binding material to go all the way around
- 1/2" elastic, I used about 3 1/2 yards

Cut down the bold crease of your length of fabric.  Lay one face down on the floor, then add batting and second layer of fabric.

Add your ironing board, measure 3" all the way around.  Use a bowl to create curves, if needed.  Trim to size.
Prepare you casing fabric, fold and iron wrong sides together, like a binding.  Open, then iron 1/4" crease in one side.
To add casing to the cover, open the casing, sew raw edges matching all the way around.  Then turn over and sew the folded side along seam sewn previously.

Insert elastic, errr, wrestle the elastic through the casing, and pull tight!  Secure the elastic with a zig-zag stitch and enjoy!

The fabric used here is Blush - you can find some at Piece n Quilt or Fat Quarter Shop.

Did I leave something out?  Have questions?  I'll answer them in the comments for everyone.

I hope you are having a great Monday!

Weekend Spotlight

Hi there!  I've been thinking about what I can do to liven this space up over the weekend. . . I typically spend my time with the family, cram in sewing time when possible, and scheme for the next week of blog posts.

And so, Weekend Spotlight!

This weekend the spotlight shifts to Michelle of Rosebud Quilter.  Michelle is preparing to move and having a HUGE sale in her shop!  Help  Michelle, clear out her shop and plan your next project.  :)

Michelle has plans to focus on her long arm quilting once moved, and continue to work full time!  Be sure to keep an eye on her blog for more  in the coming days.

Featuring Cheryl -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Hi there!  This week's featured blogger is Cheryl - she blogs at Cheryl Lynch Quilts.  I hope you enjoy~
-----

1. When did you begin quilting?
I started quilting in 1992.  We had relocated to a new state for my husband's job.  It was a great opportunity to learn something new. Being a scientist, I had always been fascinated by the geometry of quilts.

2. Why do you quilt?
After taking a few classes, I started designing my own quilts.First I designed landscape quilts, then I focused on primitive quilts and then art quilts. I quilt today as a means of creative expression.  I can't paint at all, but I use fabric as my paint.  It can be cut and manipulated into many shapes.  The prints provide texture and depth.  The interaction of fabric colors also presents a challenge.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
Fusible applique is one of my favorite techniques.  I find that machine blanket stitching around the shapes is very soothing and calming.   To assemble a multiple piece applique before attaching it to the fabric background, use parchment paper.  Assemble it on the parchment paper with a hot dry iron.  Let it cool and then peel it off, place on the fabric background and fuse.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?  (See link for more details of this beautiful quilt!)
The inspiration for "Family Musings In Blue" was the love of my family.  It includes a family tree, hearts and photos of my family. There is lots of beading and embellishing and hand embroidery.  This type of hand work was also used to embellish "Willoway - A Folk Art Farm", which was featured in Fons & Porter's magazine.  This farm represents a place where I would love to live.

5. Do you sew other things?
I don't do a lot of other sewing.  I will make curtains and drapes when necessary, but I even bring my pants to the tailor to be shortened.

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
I lecture and teach workshops that focus on  including images and words on quilts, embellishing and decorative edges.
-----
Thanks so much Cheryl for sharing!  Your quilts are works of art!

I hope you all have a great weekend - I will be playing with my new iphone :)

Ella's Dress!

I woke up yesterday morning feeling much better!  A good night's sleep was just what I needed :)

During Owen's nap I took a couple hours to finish Ella's dress, and then in the evening I worked the blind hem  out with my machine and hemmed the other two dresses.  whew!  It feels good to be done with these!
Ella's dress is Simplicity 2993, no sleeves to put in, but the collar is a bugger to get in.  End result is really cute though!  The fabric is Alhambra II, again I let Ella select the fabrics she wanted her dress made with, and she loves it!

Now I just need to get the three of them in the dresses and take their pictures - sounds easy enough, right!?

Blessings~

Excuse Me, Please!

I was hoping to have a finished dress to show you again today. . . I caught Ella's cold, and have been taking it easy.  I'm hoping to be feeling much better today!  And then finish it :)

I'm itching to have a quilt or two to post here!  I love looking through flickr and seeing beautiful creations - there's just not enough hours in the day!  You all understand that one!!

I have posted a poll in my sidebar - I did the same one a long ways back, before the inception of Blogger's Quilt Festival, before most of you were readers.  How do you press your seams?

On My Mind

Hi there!  I've been so glad to hear from so many of you, making the move with me easily here :)  I love to know that this space is part of your morning/daily routines, and thanks for the profile pic love!  I had my hair cut and colored by a professional.  A nice treat and I had to document it!

Last week I went to a guild meeting to share my quilts - I had fun talking with fellow quilters, and meeting a blog friend!  Emily invited me to share a while back, thankfully it worked out after my deadline, unfortunately Joe was called for Jury Duty the very same day!  Not wanting to bail on Emily, I packed up the kids and made the drive - I'm so glad I did too!

Emily put together this sweet basket of goodies :)  you should know that all the chocolate is now gone, and one cake mix was put to good use as cupcakes the next day!  But I can't bear to open those fat quarter rosettes - too cute!
Sweet cupcake pincushion - will serve as a reminder of the fun afternoon among quilters :)  Thank you for having me Emily!!

I wanted to tell you about a slew of giveaways going on!

Kelly at I Have a Notion is celebrating one year of business with a month of giveaways - be sure to add her to your reader and check in daily to see what she's giving away!  I put my name in the hat a few times already :)

-----

One more thing - a few month back Joe found himself a pair of nice cowboy boots.  I laughed at first, 7 years in a small town and he finally caves, but then he kept telling me how comfortable they are!  I looked online to see what sort of offerings for ladies - just in case. . . over the weekend we were in Salt Lake, and happened on a sale.  I just wanted to try a few pair, but now these are mine!
They fit like a glove!  And don't read too cowboy :)  They have applique, distressed leather, and a nice pointy toe - what do you think?  Are you laughing at me?  Honestly, it's okay if you are :)

Hope you are having a great day!
Blessings ~

A Winner & Two Dresses

One small hiccup in my move.  While writing this, all my past comments are g o n e!  Totally missing - I think I read that they may slowly make the move, but I was expecting all those comments (with numbers!) to be there when I was ready to select a winner for the Burgundy Buttons giveaway!  Thank goodness, I have all my comments emailed to me!  If anyone has an answer to the missing comments - I'd love to know!

I lined up the emails and started counting :)  There were 440 entries and RNG selected #59

Which corresponds with Barbara!  Congratulations, Barbara :)
-----
I spent a couple hours working on dresses Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  My Sophia and Emmalie's eyes would grow wide as they realized I was working on their dresses - they are too cute!

This is Sophia's:

This is Simplicity 2711, and adorable, if I do say so myself!  I need to hem it and add a closure to the back yet, but I want to get Ella's to the same spot first :)  This pattern was fun and relatively simple, just lots of little steps in the bodice!

This is Emmalie's:

Green is her favorite color.  If she has a clean shirt and pants in green, she will wear them together - no matter what shade of green!  This flower had her name on it - and she loves, loves, loves that mommy finally made her a dress!

This is Simplicity 3546, little more challenging, mostly because it has a lot of options and a lot of instructions to go with them all!  But so cute and, Em had fun deciding which sleeves and collar she wanted to be made.  I'm not really all that indulgent with them, but a new dress is something to contemplate and make sure that they love.  Emmalie is especially picky in clothing too, so I want to be sure that she will actually wear it after spending the time making it!

The third dress, for Ellis, is cut and waiting - I need to get it done and move on, so hopefully today I will have the chance to sit and create a little :)

What are you up to today?

Blessings~

Featuring Casey -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Hi Friends!  I can hardly believe it's Friday again!  This week has been flown by, and I'm tired.  Ella's been home sick with an icky cold that seems to be going around, I think I will sanitize the house today, don't want it spreading!
-----
Casey is our featured quilter today!  You can  find her blogging Little Adventures over here - I hope you enjoy getting to know her better!

1. When did you begin quilting?
I began quilting when I was 19 after receiving my first sewing machine.  I taught myself by reading books and doing a lot of searching on the Internet.  My first quilt was a twin-sized quilt for my younger brother.  It was a simple 9 patch design and he still has it!

2. Why do you quilt?
I quilt because I love combining different fabrics into something beautiful.  I love giving quilts as gifts because everyone loves a warm cuddly quilt and it's so easy to personalize them.  You can never have too many quilts!

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?

My favorite tip would be to always hand stitch your bindings.  It may take a little time, but it looks and feels so much better than machine stitching it down.  I think the binding really finishes a quilt.  Besides, there is something lovely about sitting with the quilt spread out on your lap, putting the last finishing touches on by hand.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?

I created my Quilt Festival Quilt for my baby girl.  She's baby #4 to join our family and our second girl.  I make a quilt for each of my babies and I had been planning hers since I found out I was having a girl.  I have collected a lot of vintage linens from my thrift store trips and I knew I wanted to combine my favorites into a bright and cheery quilt for my little girl.  I'm so pleased with how it turned out.

5. Do you sew other things?
I love to sew and enjoy making lots of different things for my family and friends.  Just recently I've been doing more garment sewing and I'm having a blast!6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
Being a mother of four little ones age 7 and under keeps me very busy.  However, I always try to find a few minutes each day to create something.  Those few minutes of exercising my creativity are what keep me feeling like me.  :)

-----
Thank you for sharing Casey

I hope you all have a great weekend~

Sewing Garments!

I have two quilts due in a six weeks, but I've been promising dresses to my girls!  So my goal for this week has been to cut and start (maybe finish) three dresses!

I am a sucker for patterns when Joann's has them for $1 - we just happened to be there on one of those weekends a few months back, and I had the girls pick out patterns that they liked.  I am able to steer them toward quick and semi- easy patterns still :)  which helps!

Yesterday I finished cutting out the third dress and applied the interfacing needed, then set to work with the smallest!  I have three different patterns, so I'm taking them one at a time.  Here's the bodice to Sophia's dress --

I will share pattern details next time - I need to get it finished!  The fabrics are Nicey Jane - and so cute!  I'm hoping to add the sleeves and skirt later tonight, I'm excited to finish :)

Today I'm going to share my quilts with Emily's quilt guild!  All of them are quilts that you have seen here, nothing from my book - don't worry :)  I'm looking forward to meeting Emily - we've been blog buddies for a year and a half now, and finally meeting!

I hope that you are having a good day, what are you up to?

Two Years . . .

Today, is my two year blogiversary!  I am amazed at how time keeps on ticking by, and I'm so thankful for the community online.  I'm constantly inspired and pushed to be more creative, and encouraged in the adventure of motherhood - I LOVE it!

Looking back at the last year, I'm overwhelmed --

Last year about this time, I was mulling over a big idea, and figured out how to pull the Blogger's Quilt Festival together.  I love that we can all get together in one place and celebrate our love of creating!

Little did you know, I was also putting the final touches on a book proposal.  Which I never would have considered for myself - but God put the desire on my heart and I believed in myself enough to pitch the idea and sign the contract!  It still seems a little unreal, me, an author!?

It's been a great year!  Connections made, giveaways won and given, you have answered my random questions, and we have shared our dreams together.  I'm so thankful to be apart of this community!

Last year, I had a bag to giveaway, today I have none.  I figure the weekly giveaways by my fabulous sponsors are plenty :)  I do have a couple of requests for you though -

~ I've set up a flickr group for creations that you have made with the help of my tutorials or patterns.  Would you please join and add pictures to the group?

~ I've also set up a facebook page for my blog, if you are on facebook and would like to further connect there - become a fan!

~ If you haven't ever left a comment - do!  What's stopping you?  I would love to have the chance to meet you, and learn more about you :)  You have more to add to the conversation than you think!

~ I hope that you all have noticed the note at the top of my page!  This blog is moving!  amyscreativeside.com  will be my new home beginning this weekend, I'm telling everyone beforehand, to make sure you make the change with me.

I'm looking forward to the coming year here and the opportunities that will undoubtedly come for us to further connect and create together!  Thank you for being you, and enriching my life!

Many blessings to you~

Weekend Update

Hi Friends!  I hope you are having a good weekend, with or without your sewing machine :)  I've been making a few changes to my blog, and actually got out of the house by myself today!  Yes, that is an accomplishment around here.

-----
I've caught up on my reader a little bit this week, one item that was brought to my attention is V's block collection effort.  She needs as many of these sweet house blocks as possible by April 30th, and she's worked out a giveaway for participants too.  (I know how much you love fabric!)
The blocks will be made into quilts, for a non-profit organization in New York - the need is real and our help is a tangible way to reach out.  V has instructions for the blocks - just round up some scraps and make up one, or two, or ten!  Thanks in advance :)

-----
I got a call on Thursday - April 30th is my extended deadline for two more quilts.  We are packing 14 patterns in!  I'm honestly excited and exhausted with this turn of events.  And so the book saga continues, at a slightly slower pace  :)

-----
Don't forget to enter the giveaway here!  I've had so much fun reading everyone's childhood favorites - the variety is amazing.  Good luck to all of you, I will shut it down Sunday evening and announce a winner Monday morning!

-----
And, I bought my first domain today!  I'm having to switch away from parkcitygirl, as it was registered to the city of Park City, but I'm happy with my solution.  Any guesses as to the name?  I think there's big  hint. . .

Featuring Michelle -- A Blogger's Quilt Festival Quilter!

Happy Friday!  Today's featured blogger is Michelle from Dresden Quilter.  Michelle has been a faithful commenter and friend here, and I was so happy to see her name come up in the nominations.  I hope you enjoy getting to know Michelle ~

1. When did you begin quilting?
I first began quilting 17 years ago. I took a few classes, but did not have a sewing machine at the time. I realized that I was not very good at hand piecing and put quilting aside while I went back to school and started a career. I really got involved in quilting 10 years ago when I found out my sister was pregnant with her first child. I made a rainbow Trip Around The World for my nephew. Previous to that I had crocheted my other nephews and nieces blankets. Since that time, quilting has not been too far from my side.

2. Why do you quilt?
I quilt, because I cannot not quilt. Quilting is my passion. It is a way for me to show love to the people around me. I can think of nothing better to give than a quilt. I also using quilting, the same way a photographer takes pictures in an attempt to capture memories. When I make a quilt for someone else, I love to try to capture a piece of their soul by the fabric and pattern I choose. When I am making it for me, I use colours to remember favourite objects or memories, whether it be a flower or my wedding colours.

3. What is your favorite quilting tip?
A couple of years ago, I started making my husband a Double Irish Chain quilt. I was using Eleanor Burns’ Quilt in a Day book. In it, she suggested that you make the pieced blocks first, and then measure them before you cut out the larger block pieces. That way if you did not have a perfect ¼ inch seam, you could adjust the size of the other pieces and your seams would still match. It was as if a light bulb went off in my head. I realized that as long as I understood the math of the pattern I could change any pattern to suit my needs. I love math, by the way. That is how I made my QF quilt. I already had the strips cut out, which were smaller than the tutorial called for, but by adding in a few extra blocks and a border, I still ended up with a zigzag quilt.

4. What was your inspiration for your Quilt Festival quilt?
I love making baby quilts. I love the bold and bright colours. I was originally going to make a rail fence quilt but when I saw Amanda Jean’s tutorial for the zig zag quilt I knew that was what I was going to make. I had wanted to make a zig zag quilt for years and it was great to get to do it.

5. Do you sew other things?
I sew mostly quilts, and quilted related things such as pincushions, wall hangings, potholders, tote bags and table runners. I have sewn some clothes in the past but I have so many quilting projects planned that I do not know when I will manage to do much else. I also crochet, knit and cross-stitch.

6. Anything else you would like us to know about you?
The thing I get most often by people is how do you find time to quilt? I work full-time and have 2 young children. I will admit to some early mornings, and some late evenings to get things done. I do have a dedicated sewing room, and even a few minutes a day will eventually get the quilt done. My children do know they come first and quilting can be dropped at any moment for them, but I also think that it is good that they see me doing something I love to do. Another time saver for me has been having my quilts quilted by someone else. I also have participated in a lot of swaps over the past year. I find working on the smaller projects has really helped me stretch and grow as a quilter. Those smaller projects I have quilted myself, and I hope to be able to make more time to start quilting some of mine own quilts. I also belong to my local quilt guild and have learned a lot from the quilters there. I want to thank all of you for being such an inspiration to me. I have met so many amazing quilters online. Lastly, whenever I go out whether it be to a restaurant or museum if I see a pattern, I immediately try to figure out whether it can be made into a quilt!

-----
I do the same thing Michelle!  My most recent sketch, is a wall that I saw on TV - I can't wait to make it!

I hope you all have a great weekend~

Basics Tutorial : Sewing Accurate 1/4" Seams

While a lot of quilts can be made without using an accurate 1/4" seam, if you are following a pattern, best results come with accurate seams.  Today I'm sharing a good method for finding accuracy for you and your machine!

My best example of a inaccurate 1/4" seam is this block -

I love this block, but that tiny white strip was not in my original plans.  I did all the math, worked out all the details for a perfect 12 1/2" x 18 1/2" block, just before adding the last row - I measured.  Thank goodness!  I then calculated the needed piece, added it, and vowed to get my 1/4" seam accurate!

Here's what I've learned, and how you can achieve an accurate 1/4" seam.

These are the sewing machine feet I'm using, a 1/4" foot, and a standard foot with a wide needle opening.

Cut a few strip sets, at 2 1/2" wide, mine are 5" long.

Verify that your foot is attached tightly, or it may be wobbly.

Put your fabrics under and sew.  My fabrics are lined up and butted against the rail on the side of the foot.

Now set your seam and press.  Yes, I like to press open, and in this case it lays nice and flat for the next step.

Measure your set.  It should measure 4 1/2" exactly.

See how that little bit could add up in a block, like my example?

Let's make a small adjustment, and try again.  These are my standard settings, when I turn on my machine -

Here's the adjustment - move the needle .5 mm to the right -

Sew another strip set, set and press the seam, now to measure!

Exactly 4 1/2", and the seam is at 2 1/4" - an accurate seam!!  Here's a closer look -

But I know that not everyone has that nifty little foot - so let's look at the regular foot.  Grab your ruler and masking tape, and set down with your machine.

Put your needle down and measure 1/4" away.

Gently lay down a piece of tape, 1/4" away from the needle.

See the problem here?  It's covering the feeddog - not a good thing.  You always want your fabrics to feed evenly through the machine, and they may get sticky if you piece a lot.  My foot has lots of room for the needle to move, so that's what I'm going to do!

ETA: You could test this placement, then when accurate, mark it on your bobbin cover with a permanent marker.  Especially helpful if your needle doesn't move in so many increments like mine.

I moved the needle to the right 2.0 mm - I'm just guessing here, it's all about trial and error with your machine!

Put your needle down again to measure and mark your 1/4" with tape.

Notice that the tape seems to line up with the edge of my foot!?  Sew a strip set together, set and press your seam to measure it.

It's really close again, but not exactly 4 1/2".  One minor adjustment should be all that is needed!  I moved my needle to the right just .5 mm once again.

Sew, set and press a strip set, and then measure, again.  Success!

Looking at it slightly closer again, it measures 4 1/2" and the seam is at 2 1/4" - accuracy!

I realize that not everyone has as nice of a sewing machine as I do, you can make this work for your machine, learn about the different needle positions and feet.  There's a good combination for the two of you too!  It took me about 10-15 minutes to work out both of these methods for my machine, a little time well spent, and full of rewards as you piece your next project.

**I should say that the middle of a project is not the right time to change your methods - consistency for this project is good, and accuracy for the next one is great!

I hope that this is helpful!  Anyone have anything else to add? Questions?  I'll answer them in the comments for everyone :)
Happy Quilting!
